Health Science Education: Health Science Education includes a variety of standards necessary for competent health care workers. Integrated academics combined with health care knowledge and skills will provide a strong health care delivery system in the 21st century. It is suggested this elective course be implemented at the ninth grade. It is, however, open to students in grades 9-12. One unit of credit is awarded for this course. This course serves as a foundation of all health science courses. Rehab Therapies: Rehabilitative therapy explores career options and their related roles and responsibilities. This course discusses the legal and ethical issues related to patient care and health care delivery. Students learn how to incorporate professional behavior and medical terminology into patient assessment and treatment planning and implementation. It is suggested that the Rehabilitative Therapy course be offered to students in grades 10-12 as an elective course. One unit of credit is awarded for the course. Upon completion of the course, a student may enroll in a clinical internship which can articulate to postsecondary education or entry-level position in rehabilitation. One unit of credit is offered for the clinical internship. Anatomy & Physiology: In this course, students will examine human anatomy and physical functions. They will analyze descriptive results of abnormal physiology and evaluate clinical consequences. A workable knowledge of medical terminology will be demonstrated. It is suggested that this elective course be offered to students in grades 10-12. This course may articulate to postsecondary education. This course may be offered for one unit of science credit if the teacher is endorsed in science or for one unit of vocational credit. Nursing Education: Nursing education includes a variety of knowledge and skills necessary to become a health care worker. This course meets all federal and state requirements for a certified nurse’s aid. Clinical Internship: The Clinical Internship includes a variety of knowledge and skills necessary to become a health care worker. This course is provided for each health science teacher to design experiences in a health care facility in order to meet the needs of the community. It is suggested this course be offered to students in grades 11 and 12 as an elective course. One unit of credit is awarded for this course. Students may choose to complete a clinical internship after completing a course in Medical Therapeutics, Diagnostic Medicine, Health Informatics, Support Services, Rehabilitative Therapies, Emergency Medical Services or Nursing Education. This course is designed to be completed in a hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, medical office or other health care facility. Medical Therapeutics: Therapeutic functions involve a variety of treatments or changes in the health status of the client over time. These regimes are designed to help clients get well, manage a handicap or maintain their health. It is suggested that the therapeutic courses be offered to students in grades 10-12 as elective courses. One unit of credit is awarded for each course. Upon completion of the course, a student may enroll in a clinical internship which can articulate to postsecondary education or entry-level positions in therapeutics. One unit of credit is offered for the clinical internship. Forensic Science: This course is an overview of how science is applied to solving crimes. Topics including history of forensic sciences, collecting of evidence, analyzing results and hands-on application of many laboratory techniques used in solving crimes and identifying people and future careers. Students will participate in a mock (staged) crime scene to apply knowledge and skills gained. Emergency Medical Services: Emergency Medical Service (EMS) is designed for students interested in a career in pre-hospital or emergency patient care. Career options may include emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and emergency room nurses.It is suggested this emergency medical service course be offered to students in grades 11 and 12 as an elective course. One unit of credit is awarded for the course. Students may be eligible to certify as First Responders if the instructor and the course meet requirements of the Tennessee Department of Health.
